In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Jag Moondi. Jag is a domestic violence advocate and survivor. She has created a support group called Meri Saheli @merisahelico who’s main objective is to provide a safe haven for those who want to share their story and obtain the resources and help they need through other organizations or their peers. In this episode we discuss domestic violence and abuse, living in fear, awakenings and light bulb moments, support systems and providing hope and support for others.

Did you all know that November is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Canada?
Here are some staggering stats about Domestic Violence….
· 1 in 5 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime – Statistics Canada
· 1 in 3 women have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime – Statistics Canada
· In Canada, on average a woman is killed every 2.5 days – Statistics Canada
· 300 women and children are turned away from shelters on any given night in Canada because they’re full – Canadian Women’s Foundation
· 67% of Canadians know a woman who has experienced physical or sexual abuse - Canadian Women’s Foundation
· 6x Indigenous women are killed at six times the rate of non-Indigenous women - Canadian Women’s Foundation
· 6,000+ women and children sleep in shelters on any given night because it isn’t safe at home - Canadian Women’s Foundation
· In Canada alone, 127 women and girls have been killed in a domestic homicide from January 1, 2020 to October 26, 2020 –
·There has been a 20 to 30 per cent increase in rates of gender-based violence and domestic violence in some regions of Canada since the pandemic began – CBC News
·The Assaulted Women’s Help Line has reported that their calls have gone from 4000 calls a month to 8000 calls a month. Usually they receive 50,000 calls a year and they have received a total of 55,000 call from March to September, 2020 – The Assaulted Women’s Help Line
