Allison Lang Episode S01 EPS 299
Sunday Mar 06, 2022
Sunday Mar 06, 2022
In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Allison Lang. Allison Lang was born September 3, 1993 (she’s 28 now) in Edmonton, Alberta to parents Ted and Helen Lang. She is the eldest of 4 kids. There were no predeterminers indicating that Allison would be born missing the lower half of her left leg. Everything looked normal in ultrasounds. Allison was a breech baby so she was delivered by c-section. When delivered, the doctor looked at both of her parents and said “there is something wrong with your daughter.” My parents' hearts dropped at the news of their first child, but her mother, a nurse, quickly questioned “what is the matter?” The doctor responded with “she was born with one leg,” and her mother replied “well, how are her lungs and how is her heart?” to which the doctor rescinded “all her organs are fine.” Both Ted and Helen looked at each other, nodded and said “then there is no issue.” Allison was born with the tibia in her left leg, but not the fibula. Yet to them Allison was perfect. They vowed as parents they would do their best to raise Allison as though she were just like any other child. At the age of 16, Allison was invited by another amputee she knew through the War Amps CHAMP program (Canadian non-profit for child amputees) to come and try out for Team Canada’s Sitting Volleyball Team. This was an adaptive sport played in the Paralympics. Allison soon discovered that there were indeed other women like her with a disability, that were active, and completely in love with life. Allison is not yet a Paralympian, but she has competed internationally in England, USA, Brazil, and across Canada representing Canada in competitions like Worlds and the Panam Games. Ever since moving to Montreal she has been signed by an agency as a lifestyle model and speaker, modelling for brands like VIA Rail, Ardene, etc., and has rejoined Volleyball Canada in preparation for the Paralympics in Paris for 2024. Allison still pinches herself that she is not representing disabled peoples in ads and is living out her dream of fighting for proper representation and disability inclusivity. Allison won Up & Coming Influencer of the Year award for her drive to raise awareness on self-love. In this episode we discuss advocacy work, bullying, self-love, living with a disability, gratitude and overcoming adversity.

Sunday Feb 20, 2022
In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Kriya Lendzion. The perfect storm of Kriya's adolescent years led to her rapidly progressing from early substance experimentation to full-blown alcoholism, disordered eating, self-harm, and self-destructive sexual behaviors by her late teen years. She entered rehab at 19, while in the middle of college, and naturally pivoted towards a career in the counseling and addiction fields. Over 30 years later, she has worked with thousands of kids from elementary age through young adulthood in various school settings, with a focus on preventing and intervening with youth on harmful paths. Kriya's life journey has continued to challenge and strengthen her, as she traversed and grew through unhealthy and abusive relationships, an inherited pattern of workaholism, and the parenting challenges of being a 100% single working mom raising a “twice exceptional” bi-racial son. All of which she continues to use to not only empower herself, but to also help others evolve into their greatest potential. In this episode we discuss counselling, addiction, being the teen whisperer, learning from our mistakes and personal journey.

Sunday Feb 13, 2022
In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Michelle Emmick. Seeing a critical need in the market for transparency when it came to plastic surgery, in 2018 Michelle co-founded MyCoachMD, a platform that provides consumers education and support prior to having an elective cosmetic procedure. She shares her 20 years of experience working inside the field of aesthetics inside her Amazon Best-seller, Blue-Collar Beauty, Confessions of a Plastic Surgery Coach. “I released Blue-Collar Beauty, right before the pandemic. I thought misinformation was bad before, social media created an entirely new level!” My goal for the book was to provide others with my insider knowledge in a fun and empowering way. I also knew so many women that could do the same in the field of beauty and wellness, which led to the question why not create an “Ask Us” community?” In August 2021, Michelle co-founded Ask Us Beauty, an online magazine that collaborates with authentic women in the field of beauty and wellness to share their stories and experiences. Challenging the mainstream, the “not your typical” Ask Us Beauty Magazine combines mind, body, wellness, aesthetic medical and mass appeal, allowing women to choose for themselves what beauty means to them, both inside and out. In this episode we discuss plastic surgery, coaching, social media, unrealistic beauty standards and Ask Us Beauty Magazine.
