In the latest episode of the Empowerography Podcast, my guest is Allison Lang. Allison Lang was born September 3, 1993 (she’s 28 now) in Edmonton, Alberta to parents Ted and Helen Lang. She is the eldest of 4 kids. There were no predeterminers indicating that Allison would be born missing the lower half of her left leg. Everything looked normal in ultrasounds. Allison was a breech baby so she was delivered by c-section. When delivered, the doctor looked at both of her parents and said “there is something wrong with your daughter.” My parents' hearts dropped at the news of their first child, but her mother, a nurse, quickly questioned “what is the matter?” The doctor responded with “she was born with one leg,” and her mother replied “well, how are her lungs and how is her heart?” to which the doctor rescinded “all her organs are fine.” Both Ted and Helen looked at each other, nodded and said “then there is no issue.” Allison was born with the tibia in her left leg, but not the fibula. Yet to them Allison was perfect. They vowed as parents they would do their best to raise Allison as though she were just like any other child. At the age of 16, Allison was invited by another amputee she knew through the War Amps CHAMP program (Canadian non-profit for child amputees) to come and try out for Team Canada’s Sitting Volleyball Team. This was an adaptive sport played in the Paralympics. Allison soon discovered that there were indeed other women like her with a disability, that were active, and completely in love with life. Allison is not yet a Paralympian, but she has competed internationally in England, USA, Brazil, and across Canada representing Canada in competitions like Worlds and the Panam Games. Ever since moving to Montreal she has been signed by an agency as a lifestyle model and speaker, modelling for brands like VIA Rail, Ardene, etc., and has rejoined Volleyball Canada in preparation for the Paralympics in Paris for 2024. Allison still pinches herself that she is not representing disabled peoples in ads and is living out her dream of fighting for proper representation and disability inclusivity. Allison won Up & Coming Influencer of the Year award for her drive to raise awareness on self-love. In this episode we discuss advocacy work, bullying, self-love, living with a disability, gratitude and overcoming adversity.
